Backup Hard Drives for Newer iMacs

Buy an external hard drive that doesn’t make you buy an adapter cable

Ever since ~ 2021 when Apple switched to the new M series processors, they did away with the old rectangular USB-A type connector.

While the M series processors are awesome, all of your old USB devices don’t connect without an adapter.

This includes brand new external backup hard drives that you may purchase online or at a local store like Best Buy.

So here are some backup hard drives that come with the correct USB-C cable for your iMac or newer Apple computer.

Toshiba Canvio Flex Portable External Hard Drive

Available in 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB options. 2TB is probably the best value. It’s a magnetic drive, which I prefer for backups because I think they are more reliable than the newer SSDs for long term storage (although your mileage may vary).

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD

This is similar, but way more durable if you are planning on dropping it or getting it rained on. Hence, the much higher cost.
